Looking from a distance features two recent moving image works, Without Mind (2011) and Changeling (2010). Both pieces focus on movement in a contemplation of beauty, time, memory and transformation. These two video works are connected by a tension between the sense of intimacy and detachment in the handling of the subject, which in each case is a solo performer. In each work the movement has been digitally altered through editing processes, foregrounding our ways of looking and the weaving of possible psychological narratives.

Looking from a distance was developed with support from Arts Council England, Allenheads Contemporary Arts, Dance City, Globe Gallery and the Medical Research Council.

Looking from a distance features two recent moving image works, Without Mind (2011) and Changeling (2010). Both pieces focus on movement in a contemplation of beauty, time, memory and transformation. In each work the movement has been digitally altered through editing processes, foregrounding our ways of looking and the weaving of possible psychological narratives.

Without Mind (2011) was developed through a cross-generational collaboration with the artist’s 80 year old Grandfather, who has practiced and taught the martial art of Karate for over 25 years and holds a black belt 3rd dan grade. Karate training involves the repeated practice of specific movement phrases or kata (form) until they can be performed without thought and with a clear mind, free from fear, anger and ego, a state known as Mushin. The work focuses on 3 of the advanced kata routines forming an intimate portrait of memory and capturing the skill, power, agility and focus involved in the discipline. Conventional assumptions of age and deterioration are also questioned as the work unfolds, dissecting time, slowing to reveal the detail of each movement. Familiar representations of the aging body are subverted to reveal a body that is strong, dynamic, monumentally present, dancing an intricate dance with an invisible opponent.

Changeling (2010) makes reference to the highly symmetrical structure and geometry of viruses and their transformative power. The work also references the symbolism associated with alchemy and the alchemical opus, repeating forms in nature, sacred geometry and architecture. Here, the artist’s own body has been physically and digitally transformed altering the image of the body, even further pushing it into abstraction. As this unfamiliar body moves in and out of focus suspended in space it is glimpsed not seen, it is taken apart, re-ordered and replicated into new and exotic forms in a meditation on beauty, perfection and difference.

Paul Grimmer was born in Newcastle upon Tyne in 1975 and studied Fine Art at Northumbria University. Since 2005 he has worked as an artist as well as coordinating events with live art organisation Platform North East and collaboratively setting up Piggyback Arts. He often works in collaboration and has spent time engaging with research in a number of scientific institutions/organisations in the UK. His moving image, installation and performance work explores the biological and psychological, focusing on gaps in understanding, tensions between opposing forces and the fluid nature of identity. Recent exhibitions include: ‘Changeling’ (Globe Gallery, North Shields), ‘Triparks’ (UK touring group exhibition) and screenings in the UK, USA and Europe of ‘Continuum’, a 360° video work made specifically for viewing in Planetariums. Paul Grimmer currently lives and works in Newcastle upon Tyne.

Changeling was developed during residencies with the Medical Research Council Virology Unit, (Glasgow), Allenheads Contemporary Arts (Northumberland) and Dance City (Newcastle upon Tyne). Developed with support from Arts Council England and Globe Gallery (Newcastle upon Tyne). Without Mind was developed during a residency with Dance City (Newcastle upon Tyne) and with support from Arts Council England.

Editing 'Without Mind'

Been a really busy week of editing the new work and making preparations for Looking from a distance, which opens on the 10th September. The work is looking really great thanks to the editing skills of Andrzej Wojtas (Hacksquad) and we are now making the final adjustments to the colour grade and sound.

I am thinking of using either Without Mind or The Mind Without Mind for the title of the piece. Both are translations of Zen expressions, either mushin or mushin no shin, which refers to the idea of focus through a de-focusing of thought, losing anger, fear and ego and achieving a sense of flow. The term applies directly to the practice of the Japanese martial arts though it can be achieved in other areas of life. Scientific research has shown that martial arts practitioners have an increased ability to regulate brain wave activity through entering this flow 'zone'.

Started working with Andrzej Wojtas and Ewelina Aleksandrowicz (Hacksquad) yesterday capturing some video footage of selected clips. I was amazed at the quality achieved with the Panasonic camera they were using. The close up shots of showing texture and quality of skin are absolutely amazing. We are now hoping to work with Red cam, Which is capable of capturing with a faster shutter speed at 120fps, so will be able to recreate the shots and capture even more minute detail in the movement and expression.

Tomorrow we will also be working with cinematographer Kyle Heslop.

Creative Summer Residency @ Dance City - part 1

I was very happy to receive funding from Arts Council recently to both begin development of a new body of work and install an exhibition at the Berwick Gymnasium Gallery, which will also be part of this years Berwick Film and Media Festival.

Since Monday I have been working at Dance City with my Grandad on a Creative Summer week long residency. The experience so far has been amazing! After 25 years of training he has attained the level of black belt, 3rd Dan in Wado Ryu style karate.

Watching him perform the karate katas (choreographed movement phrases involving blocks and attacks) in the past it has appeared both complex and in some way simple. I realise now that achieving the appearance of simplicity is very difficult. Monday and Tuesday we worked together as teacher (Sensei) and student as I attempted to learn the first black belt kata (Seishan). It was fascinating to learn, but more interesting to learn from my Grandad and to see him change from the the man I know to the intense focused state when performing. He told me that when he is performing the kata's he sees nothing else, everything else disappears.

During the fisrt 2 days I also observed my grandad performing three of the black belt kata -Seishan, Basai and Rohai - and began capturing some of the more dynamic moves.

3º of Separation is a project organised by Gateshead-based artists Jo Coupe and Catherine Bertola, and funded by Turning Point North East’s Critical Dialogue Bursary.

The project involved a series of three one-day discussion events, with each event having a different emphasis, based on commonalities identified within our own work: Materiality, Time and Site and Context.

The artists attending were selected using the principle of degrees of separation – there being apparently only 7 degrees of separations between any two people on Earth. The selection started by each of us inviting one artist from the region, with whom we felt a connection in relation to the concept being discussed. These two artists were then asked to invite an artist on the same premise, and finally that artist was asked to do the same. This chain connection created three diverse groupings of eight artists, brought together purely on the basis of their work.

The events encompassed presentations by all the artists, followed by a discussion around the work presented in relation to the focus of the event. A writer was invited to attend each of the events and then commissioned to write a critical response to the conversation that ensued.

The resulting essays by Ruth Barker, Martin Herbert and Stephen Feeke can be found on the website, along with information about the twenty artists involved;

The last few weeks have been really busy...

Last Friday I took part in '3 degrees of Separation', an artists discussion event organised by North East artists Jo Coupe and Catherine Bertola and supported by Turning Point. The event gave the opportunity for 8 artists to discuss their practices in relation the the theme of 'time'. The selection for the event was really interesting, with each artist choosing another in a chain. The choices were made based on similarities in practice or relationship of work to the theme. There will be two further events based on themes of 'site and context' and 'materiality'. A further artist was invited to respond to the discussion and create a written text. The outcome will be a limited edition set of 3 books.

The website for 3 degrees of Separation can be found here. It will continue to grow as further events take place and the written texts are added.

On Monday I attended the Journal Culture Awards, where I had been shortlisted for the 'Visual Artist of the Year 2010'. The shortlisting was for the screening of 'Continuum' at Centre for Life's planetarium last June and was based on public vote and recommendation. Congratulations to Laura Lancaster who won the award!

I have also been working on several proposals to start researching a new project. I met with Emma Kirkpatrick from the Institute of Neuroscience at Newcastle University to discuss a possible collaboration as part of this research. More on this soon...

I have been invited to take part in an exciting new project organised by North East based artists Catherine Bertola and Jo Coupe. I will be taking part in the first discussion day on the 25th March with a focus on time. Here is some information about the project -

"3 degrees of Separation is a series of three one-day discussion events, taking place in Spring 2011 and organised by Jo Coupe and Catherine Bertola, both artists based in Gateshead.

Each event will have a different emphasis, based on commonalities within our work. The ‘focus’ for each of the three events is:

Time exploring the relationship that works have with time, in relation to how the work is experienced, how work changes and evolves over time and the association with history and a sense of mortality

Materiality looking at the importance of materials and process in the making and in the meaning of the work, potentially touching on ideas of beauty, craft and the importance of authorship in the work

Site and Context examining how works are developed in response to ‘sites’, from specific places to the use of more personal and found objects in the work, and how works is transformed by the context in which it is experienced

The selection of artists is based on the principle of degrees of separation – there being apparently only 7 degrees of separations between any two people on Earth. Transhumation - installation at Van Mildert College, Durham University

After several months of negotiation, Transhumation was successfully installed at Van Mildert College, Durham University yesterday along with the digital image work, Viral Portraits.

Transhumation was produced as part of the Triparks residency in 2008 and has been touring the UK as part of a group show of the same name since. The work includes images from the research of Charlotte Roberts, Professor of Archaeology at Durham.

Thanks to Charlotte Roberts for approaching the Durham on my behalf and to Henry Dyson for recommending the work for installation. Also Professor Patrick O'Meara the Master of Van Mildert College and the team who installed the work yesterday.

Continuum - 2011 screenings

Continuum has been programmed into this years Newcastle Science Festival on 14th March at Centre for Life where it will be sharing an evening with the preview of 'Primitive Streak'. The work has also been programmed at Fulldome Festival UK 2011, (12th - 13th March). The event will be held at Thinktank Birmingham and has been coordinated by Plymouth based organisation GaiaNova.

The work has also been submitted to the International Fulldome Festival in Portugal and The 5th Fulldome Festival at the Jena Zeiss Planetarium in Germany.

I packed in a hurry. I didn't realise that the shoes I packed for my performance didn't match. They were both black shoes, work shoes, formal shoes, shoes I don't wear very often. I wore them anyway, no one would notice? I noticed the heals were slightly different heights, the leather on one of the shoes was softer than the other, one was more pointed - they both got scuffed during the performance.

The performance took place as part of a 3-day event at Landguard Fort in Felixstowe called Response, curated by Helen Lydia Green and Michael Lumb for GRIP. The Fort was an amazing setting, full of hidden corners and corridors, holes and history - standing strong against industrial backdrop of Felixstowe Port.

The performance involved working with costume designer Jo Brossman to create an exaggerated red cape which measured 2600 cm x 120 cm. With this cape concertinaed on my back I bowed before the audience at the opening to one of the long, narrow lamp corridors in the fort. The end of the cape was moved over my head and placed at the feet of the audience. I moved slowly backward along the narrow space, unfolding, covering and revealing - filling the space with a river of red. I heard voices - is there someone under there?

Call for All Creative’s and Scientists: Factory Night @ Dove Marine Laboratory

WHEN: Thursday 16th September 2010, 6pm-9pm

Factory Nights at Dove Marine will be an inspiring working sessions that brings together scientists and artists. The artists will be from a variety of disciplines, including visual artists, photographers, writers, poets, musicians, and filmmakers. Scientists from any field are welcome.

NEW commissions/NEW collaborations for Factory Nights 2009-2010:

Artists and Scientists that attend the Dove Marine Lab Factory Night will have the opportunity to submit a brief proposal to rednile for help with the development of a new idea or initiation of a new collaboration which has been inspired by the session or with another guest on the night.
This commission opportunity is part of North Tyneside's Year of the Arts 2010-11 and will be linked to the Winslow Homer centenary events taking place around Cullercoats dramatic coast that was inspiration for his much loved paintings.

rednile are commissioning a series of writers to respond to this new concept of collaboration and initiating projects which will result in a research publication. Anyone attending the Factory Nights could be selected to feature in this publication.
Format of the Night:

12 artists from a variety of disciplines with a specialism or interest in science will be invited through rednile.  12 scientists with an interest in expanding their research or collaborating with an artist will be invited through Dove Marine Lab.

The group will spend only one night together in the Marine lab for approximately 2-3 hours in a relaxed and informal setting. All attendees will bring along a project or piece of research they have been working on. This is not to do a presentation but rather to use as a starting point when meeting other guests and to use as inspiration for possible collaborations.

Background Information:

For over one hundred years the Dove Marine Laboratory has played a pivotal role in contributing to our understanding of fisheries science, marine organismal biology, ecology, and of human impacts on our oceans. Marine science is a research area of global importance in the 21st century, with issues such as climate change, biodiversity and habitat loss, ocean acidification and marine species invasions challenging our expertise and capabilities, and the Dove continues to contribute both nationally and internationally to these endeavours. Marine science is also furthering biotechnological and pharmaceutical competence through the development of novel techniques and new drugs. It opens up the possibility of providing protein for global human populations through sustainable aquaculture technologies. Our oceans and seas are clearly a new ‘frontier’ in which sustainable development in this age of critical population growth must be addressed. Since 2002 the Dove Marine Laboratory has been located within Newcastle Universities School of Marine Science and Technology, the broadest-based marine school in Europe. Fields embraced by the School include engineering, biology, naval architecture, coastal management, environmental sustainability and small craft technology. The strength of the School lies in bringing together the expertise from such diverse disciplines in exciting research and educational programmes.

This Factory Night follows on from the successful collaboration with Dove by artist Cath Keay. During her research at Dove, Cath made a series of text-based terracotta sculptures that were submerged to be colonised by marine organisms. Cath will be attending the Factory Night and co-hosting the tour element.

'Response' at Landguard Fort - Palimpsest (Scar)

I am developing a new performance work for 'Response', an event taking place in October at Landguard Fort, an English Heritage site on Felixstowe Harbour in Suffolk. Responding to the site, a stronghold, the work will approach themes of power, dominance and submission - referencing the king - the red cape of Caesar and domestic work, service and repair. Simultaneously healing and inflicting - smoothing over and opening an old wound.

I am interested in using the corridor spaces of the fort - the veins and arteries of the building. I am working with the title Palimpsest (Scar). The work will explore the idea of writing and re-writing, covering and revealing, the fort itself has undergone a number of architectural additions over the years, being re-written in stone. I have been thinking about the history of the place, a military history, battles fought by men, written in words on pages, now re-enacted - what is really told? What is lost?

Unfolding, slowly, moving backwards and forwards in time, a welcoming and a warning, soft underfoot - a red carpet - a red river.

ArtPrize update & official event poster

I am currently preparing the planetarium work Continuum for shipping to the US for ArtPrize. The larger Planetarium screens - Grand Rapids Public Museum, where the work will show measures 50' across - demand that the work be created at 4000 x 4000 pixels. To transfer the flat video onto the Evans & Sutherland projection system used by the museum it must first be broken down, saving each of the works 23,220 individual frames as an individual image file (dome master). The work can then be uploaded onto the system where it is further de-constructed before being re-compiled for display across 6 projectors, which blend the work seamlessly for the hemispherical screen.

'The Rules of Engagement' images/early ideas for new work

These images were captured during the production of the video piece The Rules of Engagement (2006), working with my grandfather at the Waygood Gallery and Studios in Newcastle upon Tyne. I love the concentration, focus and the feeling of strength that the images convey. The experience of working with my grandfather to make the piece was amazing - his total commitment to the performance and the art was really inspiring.

Early ideas/starting points for work

I particularly like the level of detail in the skin, which is missing in the video work. I hope to pick up on this a bit more on the new work I am about to begin using HD to shoot. I also hope to be able to emphasise the precision of the movement and the focus and the concentration using slow motion cameras.

I am interested in exploring the use of a fragmented image, focusing the camera on specific parts of our bodies - two rooms - as they move, reflecting one another - providing the viewer with snippets of visual information - inviting them to fill in the gaps - the closure principle. After a busy year working on the Mutations project I feel able to think about new work. During the project I began working with movement, which has opened up new ways of considering the body. With this new focus I want to go re-visit a work I completed several years ago working with my Grandfather, who at 79 is a practicing 3rd Dan, Black Belt in Karate. The work entitled The Rules of Engagement (see below) created a portrait, not only of the individual and the actions but of memory The work, filmed from a static camera documented 11 Wadō-ryū style katas - fighting dances with an invisible opponent.

The practice of the kata and Karate can be viewed as a strive for perfection, for a harmony of body and mind, the attainment of which can only be achieved through repetition. Repetition encodes the action in the body and muscle, making it reflex, making it instinct.

I am interested in exploring proprioception and kinesthetics, the memory of my body, muscle and genes. I am going to work with my Grandfather again, we share genes, will this effect the way we work together? I have asked him to teach me to perform kata. I will attempt to learn from observation, mirroring his actions, perhaps we will have to re-think? I will be attempting to run before I can walk, obviously.

Triparks update

The Triparks project is drawing to a close after touring the UK for the past 18 months. A final show of the work Bridget Kennedy and myself produced from our residencies in Northumberland National Park is being planned for Allenheads Contemporaty Arts Shop Gallery space along with an evaluation.

Very pleased to receive final confirmation today that Continuum will screen during ArtPrize 2010 at the Grand Rapids Public Museum, Michigan. The event will take place September 22nd - October 10th and Continuum will show throughout on a cycle with 2 other planetarium works.

A portal to an unspecific place opens to reveal glimpses of a body form that constantly mutates. Changeling explores themes of control, ambiguity and the constructed self, challenging and transforming perceptions of beauty and perfection.

Peer through the looking glass into another world, an unseen world, some things seem familiar, some strange, like a dream. Here, in this other world a body moves, in and out of focus, suspended, opening and closing, forming and re-forming, seeking perfection, struggling to fit between ends always unknown.

Changeling is a gallery adaptation of the fulldome work Continuum and part of a larger body of work Mutations. The work was developed during residencies with the Medical Research Council, Virology Unit, Glasgow (2008), Allenheads Contemporary Arts, Northumberland (2009) and Dance City, Newcastle (2009).

I am currently developing a new video work for a show at Globe Gallery, North Shields. Preparation began last week and the work is now being composited in Adobe After Effects by Andrzej Wojtas, who recently edited my fulldome work Continuum. The installation in the gallery consists of rear-projection onto 5' 5" diameter circular screen with a custom built frame by William Oliver & Rodman Russel Ltd. The construction of the circular steel frame is based on the design of an embroidery ring. The work is an outcome from the Mutations project, which looks at traditional notions of beauty, which are often bound up with balance, order and harmony. Alongside this, it considers imperfection, difference the struggle to 'fit', whether physically or psychologically. The ideas that developed out of the various periods of research - however abstracted and ambiguous - deal with transformation of self, image, identity and the potential beauty in imperfection and difference. Changeling, the new work in development for Globe gently approaches some of these ideas.

In Western European mythology a Changeling is the child of a fairy, troll, elf or other mythological creature left behind in place of a human child that has been taken. The term 'Changeling' came to represent the unknown in medieval literature, often being used to describe children with unidentified physical or mental disease or illness.

The research, which fed ideas into the development of the project looked at several very different tranformative processes. During the residency with the MRC Virology Unit I spent time observing the potential and often devastating method by which a virus particle enters and appropriates the human body at a cellular level. The virus manipulates our biology to gain an advantage, every part of the cell structure is utilised in the production of new virus progeny. In contrast, my time in rural Allenheads during the Base Elements residency led me to look at the alchemical opus and the quest for perfection though the transmutation of base metals into gold. Gold has a complex and conflicting role in the mythology of many cultures and still reflects ideas of status. It has been used to symbolise idolatry and the divine, a blessing and a curse.

In the work the body has been altered both physically and through digital editing becoming a hybrid of both traditional and contemporary notions of beauty, perfection and their opposites. We recognise the tail, a symbol of difference, a psychological manifestation, a mutation or a myth? In the early stages of development human embryos develop tail structures however, these recede and though there have been claims, there are no recorded instances of a human child being born with a tail. When ideas emerged for the prosthetic tail I was interested in this idea of an impossible mutation, a representation of the unseen, a physical projection of the unconscious, also a possible bringer of balance.

‘Continuum’ will preview at the Planetarium, Centre for Life, Newcastle upon Tyne on Friday 25th June as part of ‘Identity Masquerade’ between 18:30 - 21:00.

Newcastle based artist Paul Grimmer will be premiering his new video work in the unique immersive environment of the Planetarium at Newcastle’s Centre for Life. Grimmer developed the work during artist residencies with the Medical Research Council, Virology Unit in Glasgow (2008) and Allenheads Contemporary Arts in rural Northumberland (2009).

‘Continuum’ has been created specifically for the 10-metre diameter hemispherical screen at Centre for Life’s Planetarium, the largest in the region. Created with support from the development team at Life, ‘Continuum’ uses fulldome technology to create an immersive experience for the viewer, placing them inside of the work. The Centre is currently celebrating 10 years of excellence in the field of genetic research, which has been another influence for Grimmer’s work.

“The work explores the gaps between what we see and understand and what remains unseen and incomprehensible. ‘Continuum’ imagines another world, perhaps a microscopic world, like that of the virus or one that is as unimaginably vast as the universe. These extremes can only be visualised with the help of science and yet retain a sense of wonder and magic, they live in the imagination”

“Certain genetic mutations manifest themselves visibly, others are invisible but are mutations nonetheless. To the virus mutation is key to survival. Viruses are deadly and dangerous, yet highly ordered and beautiful, I am interested in these dualities”

Complementing the visuals is a 5.1 surround soundscape produced and mixed for the planetarium by composer and musician Nick Able and multi-media artist and musician Benjamin Freeth, both based in Newcastle. The soundscape was created with support from Culture Lab and Newburn Surgery where recordings were gathered from the artist’s body as source material.

During his residency at Allenheads Grimmer contacted prosthetics sculptor Satinder Chumber with a strange request, to make him a tail. This unusual body modification was to be worn during the video shoot for Continuum. The transformation also involved the artist being painted gold from head to foot, creating a body both beautiful and grotesque. Working with movement, researched and developed at Dance City (2009), ‘Continuum’ explores mutation, difference and notions of beauty.

BAP Conference at INTECH

Continuum had it's first screening for delegates at this years BAP (British Association of Planetaria) conference at INTECH on Friday 5th May. I also spoke on a panel discussion at the conference about the potential for artists to use planetaria for making work.

Intech have an impressive 16 metre diameter dome and a fairly new system, which produced a slightly sharper image on the playback of the work. I hope to be able to show the work there again in the future, the space was fantastic.

I have just begun a period of work in the Glass and Ceramics Department at Sunderland University as part of the AA2A scheme. The department is based at the National Glass Centre. During my time I hope to re-connect with some of the more sculptural aspect of my practice, working with ceramics. I also hope to work with glass, a material I have not explored in my practice before.

During the time I will be developing ideas and sculptural objects to become part of a new performance installation work for Response, a 3-day festival taking place at Landguard Fort, Felixstowe in October.

Taking Stock - Difficult Decisions

Following best efforts from the team involved in the making of Continuum we had to pull the work from the Science Festival program at the 11th hour. This decision was not taken lightly but the quality of the video edit as it stood simply wasn't good enough to be shown.

Nick and Ben have made a beautiful soundscape and with new editor Andrzej Wojtas on board renewed energy has been brought to the project.

We hope that Continuum will show in the near future at Centre for Life, the space for which it was originally conceived. However, in the meantime the work will show at the British Association of Planetaria (BAP) conference at Intech, near Winchester in May. Chris Hudson of Centre for Life will be making a presentation about art in domes and he has secured a spot for the work.

Above are some examples of Fulldome master images showing the level of distortion required to compensate for the 36o viewing experience in the planetarium dome. The 'sweet spot' is the name given to the spot between 35 - 45 degrees from the bottom front of the hemispherical viewing screen in a planetarium with a forward facing arrangement. This is the natural focus for the eye of the viewer and can be used and manipulated in the production of the work.

National Space Centre - Continuum Research Trip

Chris, Ian and me visited the National Space Centre in Leicester to conduct research for the Continuum project. We met with Paul Mowbray, the director of NSC Creative, the department responsible for creating high end computer generated fulldome animations for planetariums worldwide. Paul very kindly offered his time to run through a couple of nagging questions about the shift from flat plane video to the hemispherical immersive environments of planetarium screens. The meeting also gave us the opportunity to watch some of the teams productions on their planetarium screen, which is even bigger than the one at Life, measuring a whopping 60 ft in diameter - it's huge! The experience was different again from that of previous planetariums I had visited. I realised that taking this work on from Life could be tricky, especially when it comes to defining the 'sweet spot' and mixing the soundscape.

Exploring notions of beauty and the struggle for perfection, 'Continuum' peers through the looking glass into another world, somewhere between the familiar and the the unknown, where the body is transformed.

I am developing a new video work for Newcastle ScienceFest 2010. the work will be specially adapted for the unique setting of the planetarium at Newcastle's Centre for Life. Shooting will begin at the Lab Space at Dance City in January with Ian Bailey (Darkeye Digital)

The work has been in the planning for some time. It marks the first outcome of over a year of research, which has included residencies with the Medical Research Council, Virology Unit (Glasgow), Allenheads Contemporary Arts (Northumberland) and Dance City (Newcastle).

I have been working with Chris Hudson (Public Engagement Technical Coordinator) at Life to figure out logistics of creating Fulldome video for the hemispherical surface of the planetarium. We plan to visit the National Space Centre in Leicester to meet with Paul Mowbray in their creative department and talk about some of the technical aspects of this form of creation. National Space Centre Creative are responsible for some of the most innovative Fulldome productions, view some trailers here.

A specially created 5.1 surround soundscape will be commissioned by Nick Able and Benjamin Freeth. We hope to gather sounds from the body using specialised microphones and to blend these with synthesised elements to create an atmosphere that will both inform and respond to the visuals.

Placing one against another…

The work plays with the senses, exploring the psychological and unseen forces operating between two bodies in space. Exposing in the gaps between a primitive desire to fill and smooth space, interrupt and control time and cover up the silence.

Originally developed and performed during an exchange with Istanbul where participants memories and fears of interrogation transformed the work. This adapted version, in an overtly theatrical setting places the spotlight on the viewer. Taking a familiar space with familiar rules and etiquette and shifting the balance of power.

INX has been organised by 25 Stratford Grove, and is taking place as part of Wunderbar Festival 2009

Dance City's Dance Lab space is vast, the first feelings on arriving were of apprehension, what was I doing here in this expanse, how would I fill it? I felt small, isolated, slightly disoriented.

I wanted to explore balance, movement, losing inhibitions and gaining awareness of my body. I met with Fiona Wright several times before taking on this opportunity. Fiona is an artist with a background in dance and movement, making live art works which draw from these disciplines. Something I am keen to explore for a new piece of video work, developing out of the Mutations research.

Fiona gave me some starting points, exercises to get me in touch with my body, to feel it. I started with some of these.

I decided to document the process with video and to write and draw, to take time out, separate from the usual pressures.

INX - Design for Event Passport

I have been working with artist Carole Luby of independent art space/artist retreat 25 Stratford Grove, to co-curate this international exchange between Istanbul and Newcastle. The event follows a successful reciprocal exchange in March 2008.

I am also working on the branding and publicity for the event, which is to be part of the Wunderbar Festival 2009. The design idea is very simple, creating an event passport, for an event, which has been overshadowed by the current home office restrictions on artists and performers entering the UK to work. We continue to keep our fingers crossed that the Turkish artists traveling here will not face any problems on their arrival.

Over two days the Star and Shadow will house a variety of performances and interventions to encourage curiosity and debate, as well hosting an open and informal discussion and a lively post-performance party with music, food, bar and surprise guest appearances!

Opus - Designs for Neon Tessellations

The Base Elements residency got me thinking about processes of viral replication (and mutation) and the alchemical opus (transmutation of base metals, particularly lead, into gold). Using these processes as metaphors for the struggle toward perfection I created a series of 4 heraldic designs. The designs also have structural attributes and the capacity to form tessellations.
